Fight for coffee and a pastry, for a short espresso, a long one, a cappuccino,

and for almonds, cinnamon, apples, and poppyseed cake,

for the jacaranda in bloom, girls on bicycles,

shaded boulevards, white houses, buses, open markets.

Fight for cheeses and chocolate and wine and tomatoes,

fight for market stalls and beggars, Friday hummus,

and an afternoon arak. For dogs and for cats,

for birdbaths and water lilies,

for elderly couples holding hands, for cyclists.

Fight for the beach sand, the waves, and the surfers,

for matkot, sunscreen, and windblown hair,

for cigarettes and dawn kisses on the beach, for runners—men and women.

Fight for an evening beer and women on scooters,

for parking tickets, corner bodeg
as, and parties,

for protests and demonstrations, for quiet autumn weekends,

for candles in the windows in winter, for choice, and for speeding,

for wet asphalt, slow-moving cars, and cold cheeks in the rain,

for the first heatwave, the body's beauty, and light clothing,

for a glance, for loud laughter, and raised voices in conversation,

for longing, for touch, for the blooming of tipu and royal poinciana.

Fight for the remaining sycamores, the scent of carob, and morning hugs,

for the audacity and the love, for literature and poetry.

Fight for The Flowers of Evil, for Leaves of Grass, for Moby-Dick,

for street benches, the smell of falafel, and flower shops.

Fight for classical music, rock 'n' roll, and kindergartens,

for poetry readings and gallery openings, for painters, and outdoor sculptures.

Fight for the almond trees in blossom and hazelnut ice cream,

for a five o'clock cup of tea and small bookstores,

for gourmet delis, for the Marx Brothers, for the joy of talking nonsense.

Fight for restaurants, for makeup, shoes, and fine clothes,

for Mary Poppins, Harry Potter, and Star Wars.
